WordPress has a list of external links, sometimes referred to as ablogroll.
These are put in categories.
They can be imported or exported or they canadded to or deleted and they can be edited.
The links that are managed and categorized in the links sub-panel are the websites and blogs addresses that you want to share with others.
Sites that have information and resources that site visitors may find useful.
They can also be links from blogs or even links to other sites you own.
And they do not have to be external links, they can be internal links to your own site.
These are not, however, the incoming links from other sites that show in the incoming links dashboard panel, the links here are your outgoing links.
These outgoing links are displayed using the widget under the appearance >> widgets sub-panel.
Clicking on the links sub-menu will display the table of the links.
Clicking the screen options tab at the top of this panel opens a screen that allows you to choose which table columns are visible or hidden on the table.
Select a box for a column you want to make visible in the table or un-check it to hide that column.
Clicking the tab again will close the screen.
There is also asearch option to find links thatyou want to edit or delete.
And at the top of this screen is a quick link drop down menu for commonly used functions.
WordPress has a default list under the blogroll category which contains a list of links to various WordPress.
This default link list can be renamed and edited to fit your site.
But since it is the default category it cannot be deleted.
The sub-panel under the links administrative panel displays a table of your various links and this is where you manage and edit.
These are alphabetically by name, in rows with these columns.
The check box is used to select a link for a bulk action.
Clicking on the box will select that link.
The name or title that you assigned the link.
If you do not assign a name then it will default to the link url when it was created.
If you click on a name then WordPress will take you to the edit link screen.
Url is the destination web address.
Clicking on this link will take you to that url destination.
All belong to at least one category.
A category name must be unique.
These categories help with navigation and grouping of similar links.
Unlike the post categories in WordPress these have no hierarchywhich means there are no subcategories.
This column is the category that the link belongs.
The default is blogroll, so any link not assigned a specific category will be put in this default category.
The relationship column.
The column lists the xfnrelationships.
Xfn ( xhtml friend network) and is a social network tool that provides a way to indicate the relationship you have with the humans by adding keywords that describes your relationship.
These keywords can be recognized by browsers to help find people of similar interest.
Xfn is available when you add a new link using the links panel >> add new sub-panel.
This is completely optional.
Visible tells you if this is public (visible) or private (not visible).
Rating is a scale from 0 to 9.
It is optional and exactly what this rating actually describesis entirely up to you.
Along the top of the table are the bulk action and filter drop-down menus.
The bulk action is applied to any box that is checked on the table.
Select the box and chose the action and click apply.
The two filter options can be used one at a time or you can use a combination of the choices to filter various links for editing.
You can sort by category in the first drop-down menu (a category will not appear in this drop-down menu until it has at least one) and you can arrange the order of that list by name, by address (this is the url table heading), by rating (which you assign) and by linkid which is a unique number WordPress assigns to the link and never changes.
This id does not show in this links table.
You can see this id by hovering over the link name.
This id will appear in the browser link field (in firefox this appears at the bottom of the browser).
As link_id=the number.
Choose the filters you want and then click the filter button.
At the top of the panel is an add new button for adding new links.
